The Special Operations Command South (SOCSOUTH) is a component command of the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM). It serves as the U.S. military's primary organization for conducting special operations within the geographic area of responsibility (G-AoR) of USSOUTHCOM, which spans from the Caribbean to Central and South America.Established in 2006 as a subordinate command under USSOUTHCOM, SOCSOUTH coordinates and executes special operations with regional partners, focusing on counter-terrorism, counternarcotics, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response missions. It collaborates closely with the Special Operations Command Central (SOCENT) and other U.S. military commands to ensure a unified and coordinated approach to its mission set.The command's headquarters are located at Naval Station Souda Bay in Crete, Greece, reflecting its role as a global actor within the U.S. military special operations community. The personnel of SOCSOUTH consist primarily of active-duty service members from the Army Special Forces, Navy SEALs, Air Force Special Tactics teams, and Marine Raiders, among others.In addition to its core mission areas, SOCSOUTH also supports regional partnership building efforts, helping to foster strong relationships with key partner nations through training exercises, joint operations, and capacity-building initiatives.
