Cucumbers grow best in a wind-sheltered site with rich, warm, sandy loam. Sow seed when the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up to at least18C (65F). Cooler soils lead to poor germination. Sow seed 2cm (3/4in) deep with 8 seeds per hill in hills spaced 120-150cm (4-5ft) apart. After germination, thin to 4 plants per hill. Cucumbers are shallow rooted and need a consistent and even supply of water. Water is best applied early in the morning to avoid creating favourable conditions for mildew on the foliage.
